Monday Night Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class - New London Groton BJJ

Today in Our Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class we went over how to prevent a sucker punch. We define sucker punch as anytime somebody is close enough to us to through a punch that we are not expecting. The first thing we always discuss when going over dealing with a potentially hostile person is the ranges of combat in a street fight and understanding where you are safe and where you are in danger of getting knocked out. We also talk about how to keep your hands up protecting your face in a non-threatening way so that we don’t unintentionally escalate the situation. If we are forced into a physical situation we want to close the distance as quickly as possible to avoid getting punched. From this position we worked moving to an angle where we can perform a hip throw and land on the ground in the Top Position. BJJ is all about putting yourself in a position where you are safe and can control an attacker without being punched or kicked.

Once we were on the ground in a dominate position we went over how to keep this dominate position using balance and arm position.
