6AM Jiu-Jitsu: Starting the day in the Flow
Yesterday started off the way everyday should, with Jiu-Jitsu! As we always do with our 6AM Jiu-Jitsu classes we started off working through a flow drill to get everybody warmed up. Starting with how to break open the closed guard and trap the bottom BJJ players leg to make it easier to pass. Breaking the closed guard is one of the more difficult tasks in bjj because there are a number of small details that need to be accomplished while the bottom Jiu-Jitsu player is trying to stop you. Incorporating Guard Breaks into our flow drills allows new students to develop this skill over time while working into other essential Jiu-Jitsu techniques.
From the guard break we drilled passing the guard, and then a long step to take the mount position, and the bump escape. today during this drill we also talked about the defense aspects of each position, where our elbows should be, how are legs should positioned. Making sure we understand how to position our bodies defensively prevents a bad situation from getting worse which is one of the main concepts of martial arts and self defense.
