Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-jitsu from day 1

Our Fundamentals Class was created for people who have never grappled before and has been designed to provide a solid foundation for students who are looking to begin learning Martial Arts. The Crossroads Fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu class provides you with the essential techniques you need to know whether you are looking to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Self Defense, would like to compete, or are thinking about becoming a Mixed Martial Artist.

Our Fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class is made up of two parts, stand up self defense and the most essential ground fighting techniques. The goal of this class is to make sure that if you ever have to defend yourself or your family, you will be prepared. Each Fundamentals class is taught by Head Instructor and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Dustin Rhodes and, is taught in a way that even if you have no previous martial arts or grappling experience you will be able to perform and apply all of the techniques being taught.

95% of all self defense situations end up on the ground either because somebody has been hit and falls down or because somebody does not want to be hit so they grab onto their attacker. This grabbing or “Clinching” causes both people to lose their balance and fall to the ground. What Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches you is how to bring the fight to the ground in a controlled way so that you have the advantage, and what to do once you are on the ground.

Cross Roads BJJ is the gym to learn BJJ. Beware, this is not a "pay-for-your-blackbelt" program or a place to prove your manhood- it's a gym to learn BJJ from a great instructor with great students. Bear with me if you've never been to a good BJJ gym or tried the sport- it's a lifestyle and philosophy. It sounds as preachy as the words "holistic", "organic", etc- and it's something you will just have to see for yourself. The group in that gym are like family- it doesn't matter who you are, what you do for a living, or what you are going through; if you choose to check your ego at the door and become a part of that gym you won't regret it. Yes, you will get tapped out. You will want to quit. Your muscles will ache for days. You may even question the cost of tuition (and trust me it's a more than honest price). But if you join: you will get better, feel better, and be without regret. If your asking me how I know this it's because I've been to a lot of gyms throughout the East Coast and these kinds of gyms are a rarity. I was also one of Dustin's first set of students when he was a purple-belt in 2006 so I can attest to both how good of an instructor he is and how he's developed his techniques and teaching. So if your still reading this- find out when the next practice is and show up, be humble, and be ready to learn.

I am by no means an expert practitioner, but I have trained off-and-on for a few years while moving around from place to place (Active Duty Military). As a result, I have practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 7 or 8 gyms all over the country. I have seen some great gyms (and some not so great ones), but Crossroads BJJ is by far the best I’ve seen. I’m so pleased to have given it a try.

From the moment I walked in the door I was welcomed with respect and enthusiasm (which continues today) from the owner (Dustin Rhodes) and the other members/students. It was immediately clear that this is a respectful, well-maintained, facility with an incredible culture of learning intently, practicing the details, and training hard- with an incredible work ethic and spirit of inclusion.

Dustin has developed a system that allows beginners and recreational attendees to train with and learn from much more experienced competitors that train at CR BJJ. I cannot emphasize enough how impressed I am with this gym. This place is a gem in a great location in Waterford, CT.

If your looking to find a safe place to take a risk and try something new, get in better shape, learn some self defense, or just hone your BJJ skills for competitions, this is the place for you.
