Saturday Afternoon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – CT BJJ
Today in our Brazilian jiu-jitsu class at Crossroads BJJ we started class with one of the most fundamental lessons in BJJ, learning how to deal with an aggressive person who may possibly attempt to sucker punch you. Understanding how to manage distance, how to position yourself with regards to your surroundings is extremely important when dealing with a potentially violent person. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is all about managing distance to understand when you are in danger and when you are not in order to protect yourself from being hit or tackled. After we discussed and drilled what do do when somebody attempts to catch you off guard with a punch we went on to work how to control the attacker from the standing position and how to bring the fight to the ground safely while landing in the better more dominant position.
The main strategy of BJJ for Self Defense is to bring the “fight” to the ground. After we accomplish that goal, we then work to control the attacker. Today we discussed and drilled how to control somebody from the top of side control. This is one of the common themes in the Crossroads BJJ Curriculum is how to use your body weight effectively to prevent somebody from standing back up where they can punch and kick you. After everybody understood how to control from the top position we finished the class drilling one of BJJ ’s most popular submission holds, the americana, or shoulder lock.
