Today in our Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class we went over how to control a person once you achieve back mount. Back mount is the strongest position you can have in a fight because you are secured to your attackers back and they can’t see you. So not only can they not hit you, they also can’t see your attacks coming. This position gives you the option to control a person until help arrives or apply a choke and put the attacker to sleep.
Once everybody understood how to control back mount we went over two different BJJ chokes, a basic lapel chock and the tourniquet choke. These two chokes are very similar so it is easy to switch between the two. This switching causes confusion for your opponent and gives you the element of surprise. If we can keep our training partners guessing what attack we are going to use will be easier to catch them in a submission. Once you know what is coming you know what to defend(if you’ve been coming to class), so if you don’t know a submission is coming you will be late defending it, and if your late defending a move is is much more difficult to defend it successfully.
