Had a great time with the folks at crossroads BJJ gym. I'm a visitor from out of town and the welcomed me in. No attitudes nothing but friendly folks! Their professor Dustin Rhodes is very knowledgeable and inviting. I got a chance to roll with him and even though he could shut me down with every move you was light and respectful of my abilities. This is reflected in his students. Not one meathead in the bunch . Any way, top notch. Thanks for letting me train with you all!

Cool men and women that enjoy learning and helping one another get better. Quality of instruction is very good, and it’s obvious that a lot of care is put into the development of the trainees. Nothing is free so you’ll have to put in the time on the mats to progress. Be prepared to discover the many stages of white belt. Great exercise and a lot of fun learning a useable skill that not many people out there know.

CT BJJ Fundamentals of Escaping

In our Fundamentals of BJJ class at Crossroads BJJ in New London CT we spend a lot of time working on how to escape bad positions because as a new student that is often where you will find yourself against the other more knowledgeable students in the class. So before you can start submitting people you first have to get yourself to a place you can submit them without exposing yourself to them submitting you, in Jiu-Jitsu we often say position before submission.

In last nights class we worked on how to escape the mount, a dangerous position for the bottom player where the top player has a number of submission options and the ability to punch and the bottom person has nothing. In a bad position the first thing you always want to do is protect yourself from getting submitted by positioning your arms and legs correctly. Once you have done this you can begin to escape. In this particular class we escaped to full guard and then worked two sweeps to finish in the mount.

Once in the Guard we were looking to set up the flower sweep, a great option for off balancing our bjj training partner in the forward direction. Then after introducing some light resistance to see how people would defend the flower sweep we discussed the bump sweep, an option for off balancing backwards. This combination gives us great options which makes it harder to defend than if we were to only attack with one sweep by itself.
