In continuing our study of the Triangle in our Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Crossroads BJJ we started working on the how to get into the triangle from the Mounted position. The mount is one of the most powerful positions in jiu-jitsu and the triangle is one of the strongest chokes in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. By beginning to manipulate the arms so we work ourselves into a “one arm in, one arm out” situation we can begin to see how the triangle from this position is possible.
The details we focused on tonight were how to use our bodies to position the bottom players arms and prevent them from defending the submission. By positioning our body correctly we can trap the arm, and by trapping the arm we allow ourselves much more time to work. We also covered how to position the head so that moving the leg behind the neck for the submission does not require the attacker to be extremely flexible to obtain the finish.
Once everybody understood how to get to the submission we worked combining the technique with an arm bar. By attacking the arm bar and then allowing them to escape we can anticipate their movement and switch to the triangle. This strategy allows us to stay ahead, and keep the bottom player reacting to us. Part of advancing in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is understanding how people react to each technique so that we can anticipate reactions and begin to form chains of submissions.
