The most uncomfortable position in Jiu-Jitsu: knee on belly! The knee on belly position in bjj offers the top player a tremendous amount of control, the ability to be mobile and the power to make the person on the bottom life completely miserable. The position looks exactly as its name would have you believe, your knee positioned over your training partners sternum letting gravity push your weight through their body. In Jiu-Jitsu the ability to make your opponent uncomfortable has a large benefit because it forces a reaction, and taking advantage of reactions is what BJJ is all about.
In last nights class at Crossroads BJJ in CT we worked though a basic fight sequence starting with one of the more common self defense techniques. The attacker reaches for our neck in an attempt to choke us, this reach allows us to use a variation of an old judo through to bring the fight to the ground where our attacker is unable to generate any power to continue their attack. After the through we covered 2 different follow up techniques, a nearside armbar or landing in the knee on belly position. From the knee on belly position we covered 2 additional bjj techniques, an escape from the position and a far side armbar.
