We kicked off our First Noon BJJ class at Crossroads Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in spectacular fashion with 8 people on the mats taking a mid day break to get some training in. For those people who’s jobs have them woking off hours, or are able to get out of the office for an hour during the day the 12 o’clock jiu-jitsu class at Crossroads BJJ is a great way to get an extra training session in for the week and an even better way to break up the day so you can head back to whatever you have to do refreshed and recharged.
We started the class off with some movement drills just to shake off the rust and get everybody ready to train. In this BJJ class we started with a counter to the elbow escape which is really the main way the bottom jiu-jitsu player is going to attempt to escape the position so having a way to stop the bottom jiu-jitsu player from escaping is essential if you want to be able to control the fight. From here we began adding onto our drill to create a flow or sequence of moves. From the counter to the elbow escape we worked taking our opponents back. If you are unfamiliar with jiu-jitsu’s main strategy its summed up in one phrase, “Position before Submission” that means if I can put myself in a position where my training parter has no attacks I can take as much time as I need to finish the fight.
Once we countered the elbow escape and took our opponents back we switched gears and began looking at what the other Jiu-Jitsu player could do. When another Jiu-Jitsu player has taken your back you have very few attacks and these attacks are not our best option. when your training partner has the better position you must begin looking to improve your own position and in this class that meant escaping the back position. Once we escaped the back we transitioned into an ankle lock to finish the class.
