This morning during the 6AM Jiu-Jitsu class at Crossroads BJJ we worked on building a sequence of techniques off of the armbar from guard. The armbar from guard is a basic technique that the bottom Jiu-Jitsu player can attack with and from this attack the top player can only react a few different ways to successfully defend the submission attempt. If we have been training Jiu-Jitsu long enough we begin to learn what the most likely defenses to our attacks will be and we can anticipate those reactions and then train ourselves to react accordingly.
In this class the defense to the armbar was a basic stack, and because getting folding in half in not comfortable, especially at 6 in the morning we always work to defend the stack position. In this case we abandon the armbar to look for an arm drag. An arm drag is a simple technique that allows us to work towards our Jiu-Jitsu training partners back. From this arm drag we took our training partners back which allowed them to work an escape from back control and then start the drill all over again because as always repetition is what makes the difference when the pressure is on.
