Take downs, sweeps and submissions we’re all covered during last nights no-gi Jiu-Jitsu class as Coach James put together a very well rounded class where all of our students were able to take away some new tools to add to thier game.
The Jiu-Jitsu class started on on the feet with take downs, as we worked picking up and finishing the single-leg takedown, a strong wrestling technique. The focus was circling and off balancing our BJJ training partner to bring them to the hound and land in a strong top position.
From the ground we transitioned in to X-guard to pick up where we left off last week. In this class the focus was on manipulating the angle of our Jiu-Jitsu training partners knees to either sweep them and improve our position by gettining on top where we can use angles and a little help from gravity gain more control, or create a situation where our training partner tries to avoid being swept and puts thier hands on the ground. Once the hands are on the ground it becomes easier to apply leg locks. In this nogi Jiu-Jitsu class we transitioned to the straight knee bar.
The martial art of brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is really about using our intellect to find the easiest submission to apply. We always want to assume that if we have to ever use our martial arts training that our opponent will be bigger, faster and stronger than us, so we must rely on our intelligence to win. This means using our whole body to attack a small part of our Jiu-Jitsu training partners body, in this case our whole body works to manipulate the angle of the knee which in turn changes the way our training partner is standing and that change in stance allows us to attack either thier balance or the leg itself.
