Last night during the Crossroads BJJ Fundamentals class we started off with an essential Sslf Defense Skill, how to escape a headlock. In this Jiu-Jitsu class we started from standing and discussed what do to when somebody attempts to grab you around the head and attempts to punch you. We discussed how to prevent somebody from bending you over and breaking your posture, how to trap the other arm to prevent being hit and then lastly how to get the fight to the ground. Since Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that specializes in ground fighting we have to know how to get there!
On the ground we covered escaping from back control. This is probably the worst position to be in in a fight since the attacker is behind you and you can’t see the attacks coming. From this position we drilled the proper escape and how to improve your position. In this case the martial arts technique was to slide to the side where depending on how proficient you are at the escape you will either end up on top in the guard position or on the bottom in the guard position. In either case you have improved your position to a place where you can protect yourself.
