Another great Compitition class went down at Crossroads Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu last night during our No-Gi grappling class. Since all Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling classes start in the standing position we started class in on the feet drilling our double and single leg takedowns before transitioning to groundwork where we covered several set ups to the straight ankle lock.
While drilling during the technical portion of class we covered two main topics, how to tighten up the submission hold so that less movement is required to get the Tap and how to deal with somebody hand fighting you to defend thier ankle. For our Jiu-Jitsu to be effective against a resisting opponent we must understand how they are going to defend an attack so that we can devise a way to counter thier defense. In Jiu-Jitsu the more space we leave for our opponent to escape the easier it will be for them to counter our submission hold. So by tightening up our defense we can force their our opponent to be much more precise with thier escapes.
As with all of our compitition classes we ended the night with lots of sparring. At Crossroads bjj we consider our compitition Jiu-Jitsu class to be an advanced class designed for students who have been training for a significant amount of time and are looking to test their Jiu-Jitsu in a tournament setting. And if you want to test your Jiu-Jitsu in a tournament you need to get lots of sparring time in with your friends in the gym.
