in tonight’s Fundamentals class we covered three techniques, a takedown from the clinch, an elbow escape and an arm bar. These three Jiu-Jitsu techniques make up one possible fight senerio, you are taken down and find yourself underneath somebody, you elbow escape to the guard where you can more effectively use your body to protect yourself, wait for the right opportunity and apply an armbar to finish the fight. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu changed the way people view a fight in the early days of the UFC and mixed martial arts by showing that if is possible to fight off your back and win! But to be able to fight effectively off your back you have to learn how move off of your back.
Tonight’s Jiu-Jitsu class covered two separate movements, One to help us improve our position and keep ourselves save from harm and another to end the match or fight. Understanding when and where each movement can be used is an essential part of learning Jiu-Jitsu. Then once you understand how to move in each position, you drill the movements over and over until you no longer have to think about it, this drilling allows you to simply feel and react when the time Is right.
Drilling these techniques also gives you a great workout where you cover almost any aspect of fitness you can think of including cardio, balance, flexibility, strength and coordination. This drills followed by sparring with moderate resistance also helps train our minds to be more relaxed under pressure. And spending a few hours a week practicing being calm under stress provides a amazing effect on the rest of your life!
