This morning at 6am the students of Crossroads BJJ stepped onto the Mat to improve their skills and get in an early morning workout! This mornIng at Crossroads BJJ we discussed the finer points on back-control, spending time drilling how to control somebody who is actively trying to escape. How you create pressure with your arms and legs can make all the difference between securing a dominant position or ending up under a larger, stronger opponent, and if you can’t secure the position getting a submission can become much more difficult.
Once everybody on the Mat understood how to control their opponent we drilled two possible submissions, a gi choke and the rear naked choke. Understanding how to properly apply a choke hold or carotid restraint is essential to becoming a well rounded Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. A carotid restraint blocks the blood flow to the brain by restricting the carotid arteries, this causes your opponent to simply fall asleep for a short period of time. For a self defense situation this hold allows you to restrain your attacker without actually hurting them.
It is the ability to control a larger stronger opponent without having to hit or kick them which makes Jiu-Jitsu the perfect martial art for any student who is worried about being bullied at school to learn.
