Over the last week during the technique and strategy class at Crossroads Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu located inside the brand new Waterford Fitness Facility in New London County we have been discussing the idea of using our body to create walls in order to prevent people from escaping from the side control position. By breaking down how the bottom Jiu-Jitsu player can move in order to escape effectively we can begin to understand where we need to place our arms, legs, torso and even our head to stop the bottom player from moving effectively. However in a martial art as dynamic as Jiu-Jitsu positions are always changing, so I order to maintain control we must learn when to change where we are placing our walls. In the last several bjj classes we discussed how we can adapt to positional changes by adjusting our angles, where we are applying weight with our upper body and where we are placing our hands and legs so that we can maintain control while moving and the bottom Jiu-Jitsu player is moving.
The idea of being mobile while maintaining control is especially important because it is what allows you to maintain the top position while controlling Bigger stronger opponents. Instead of staying still and getting pushed around by somebody who is stronger than you, you move yourself to a position where they are weak. This process continues until the bottom Jiu-Jitsu player fatigued themselves. Once the stronger person is exhausted they are no longer the stronger person losing their advantage.
