Yesterday during our Fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu we worked a very basic “fight sequence”, starting from the guillotine we covered how to properly apply the choke, then how to defend the submission by taking the fight to the ground and applying a submission of your own. In BJJ every technique has a counter and as we progress in the martial art we can begin to anticipate what the most common reactions to a technique will allowing us to either stop the defense or apply a second, third bjj technique.
On the ground we went on to cover how to defend the von flu choke, and eventually how to escape from the bottom of side control and either reguard or even take the back. The reason Training bjj is so much fun is because little situations like the one described above are always taking place. You put your Jiu-Jitsu training partner in a guillotine and they begin to apply the defense, your training partner put you in a von flu choke and you start to work your escape, as you escape they are working to keep you from escaping and on and on. During a BJJ class your mind is so engaged in solving these little situations you don’t realize you’re also getting a great workout.
A person tries a technique and we work to solve that situation while our training partner does the same to our Jiu-Jitsu techniques.each and every class your mind is engaged in this type of problem solving. The person you are Training with is always trying to stop you from solving the puzzle of submitting them while trying to solve the puzzle of how to submit you.
