At Crossroads BJJ CT we are always working in developing a strong foundation for your long term growth in Jiu-Jitsu, this means developing the most basic techniques to a very high level. In last night class our primary focus was on maintaining Back Control. Back control is one of Jiu-Jitsu’s strongest position. The back control position allows the bjj practitioner to attack his opponent with a number of submissions but more importantly it allows him to be in a position where there is almost no risk of being hit or submitted. So the longer you can maintain/hold this position the longer you can protect yourself and the more time you will have to submit your bjj training partner. In bjj we refer to this approach as position before submission.
Class started from the feet using an arm drag get behind our opponent, from here we used our weight to drag our Jiu-Jitsu training partner to the ground before we put both hooks in and secured the position. Once we had back control we spend a majority of the class developing the arms and legs skill required to maintain the position. Once everybody in class had a firm grasp on how to maintain the position we finished the class by going over the rear naked choke (RNC). The RNC is the most powerful way to finish a fight and is what bjj became known for back in the early days of the UFC. It is s safe and highly effective way to end a self defense situation and is something every Jiu-Jitsu practitioner should be proficient at.
