The more you drill a technique the more details you will feel, the better you will be able to position your body to apply pressure and the more seamlessly you will be able to move through the individual steps of that technique. This is why each class in our BJJ Team Training program builds off the previous class. Building each class off of the previous class allows students to drill and refine the techniques they learned in the previous class and then work new techniques determined by possible reactions from thier opponent.
Last Thursday we continued on our current theme of passing the closed guard from the standing position, adding how to suitcase the legs in order to keep our opponents legs out of position and prevent them from getting any offense started. Then once the legs are neutralized move to the mount position. While last class we primarily worked standing and then working to either knee on belly or side control when our opponent is using upper body grips (collar, sleeve) in Thursday’s class we covered what to do when your opponent shuts down these passes by switching to a pants grip.
In Grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu everything starts with gripping or grabbing. The grip your opponent uses tells you what they are trying to do or prevent. If you ignore your opponents grips the. You will always be a step behind. In order to choose the correct technique you must account for how your opponent is grabbing you.
By moving with what our opponent is providing we move towards the pant grip and then using our body weight pin the legs. Once the legs have been neutralized we can work to improve our position. Remember everything in bjj is position before submission.
