This week at Crossroads BJJ has been Omoplata week. The omoplata is a shoulder lock using our legs. This Jiu-Jitsu submission hold represents what Jiu-Jitsu is, using the strong part of your body (the legs) to attack the smaller weaker part of your opponents body (the shoulder).
Over several classes we have drilled multiple escapes to the omoplata as well as transitions to alternate submissions off of escape attempts in order to develop an entire game surrounding this Jiu-Jitsu technique. The idea of this is to have so much knowledge about this submission that no matter what our martial arts training partner does we have a technical solution. This idea also defines Jiu-Jitsu, to have technical, intelligent reactions to our opponents reactions to our techniques.
Each position in Jiu-Jitsu has a set number of ways a person can react, in a submission hold there are only so many ways a person can move to escape the submission. By learning all of the possible ways a person can escape we can have a plan for each one, this is what we call a “game”. Our mission during our bjj training is to fill in the holes in our game so that no matter what Jiu-Jitsu position we end up in we have answer!
