Knowing which technique to choose for any given situation is something that comes with time in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. First you must learn a number of techniques which at first glance seem to all be used in the same situation, then you must go on to study those BJJ techniques until you discover the slight variations that allow you to discover that each technique starts in a slightly different position and ends in a slightly different position.
It is awareness of these slight variations that allow you to pick the best Jiu-Jitsu technique for each situation and by doing so you save yourself time and energy. In Jiu-Jitsu a second is an extremely large amount of time, in a second you training partner can change the direction they are moving, the amount of weight they are applying and an almost infinite number of other factors may change in that time as well. By learning and understanding when to use each technique you will be more precise in your movements and this will pay dividends in your Jiu-Jitsu.
In this mornings 6am Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Class in Waterford, CT we studied 3 different ways to move from side control to the mount position. Each technique starts in side control but each starting position is slightly different from the next and based on those small variations in the bottom Jiu-Jitsu players position we can select the most appropriate technique rather than fighting to create a situation that does not exist. Part of the reason Jiu-Jitsu is so efficient is this idea that rather then forcing your training partner to move into a position they are resisting we can simply use what they are already doing against them.
