While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gives you the ability to defend yourself while somebody is on top of you it is not the best spot to be. Always remember that Jiu-Jitsu is position before submission, so we are always looking to to put ourselves in a position were we can control our bjj training partner. It is this ability to control somebody who does not want to be controlled that keeps you safe.
In this mornings No-Gi bjj class we covered two sweeps from the butterfly guard. In Jiu-Jitsu a sweep is defined as a technique that moves you from the bottom position to the top positiom while at the same time moving your Jiu-Jitsu training partner from the top position to on their back. Achieving a position where you can perform a sweep requires managing grips, angles and distance. By managing who has the better gripping you can limit the to Jiu-Jitsu players ability to pass your guard, and if your bjj training partner can not pass you have an infinite amount of time to work your sweep. Once you negate your bjj training partners grips you can then move to the proper angle and work to sweep moving yourself to a position where it is much easier to protect yourself.
